After 18 seasons on the premier NASCAR Cup level and 20 years of full-time stock-car racing, fan-favorite Dale Earnhardt Jr. announced on April 25, 2017, that the ’17 season would be his last. The 15-time Most Popular Driver and winner of 26 NASCAR Cup races, including two Daytona 500s, was trading in his driver’s suit for a broadcaster’s necktie. Concussions had taken their toll. He was done with racing.
Now a normal every-day guy with a job and a family, Dale Earnhardt Jr. did something most only dream about. For one weekend he revisited his racing past and lived as a former version of himself – a version millions cherished during a 20-year run that featured two Daytona 500 victories and 15 NASCAR Most Popular Driver awards. On Aug. 31, 2019 in Darlington, South Carolina, Earnhardt Jr. made this journey in the competitive series where he won championships in 1998 and 1999… On the asphalt of NASCAR’s first superspeedway built in 1949… Driving a paint scheme first carried by his legendary father in 1975.
“Time Machine” documents the experience in vivid detail with Earnhardt Jr. offering real-time emotions and unabashed candor. It captures the influence Earnhardt’s wife and daughter have in his life, especially after a harrowing experience just weeks prior to the race. When it’s all said and done, “Time Machine” asks this: Will a nostalgia-rich trip to the past leave us relishing the good ol’ days, or will it reaffirm we're living our best days now?
On March 29, 2023, NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Jr. returned to Allenbrook Elementary with a special surprise from Unilever to celebrate National Reading Month.
